INTERSECTIONS
Multi-Purpose Capability

Trans Lunar Ferry
'The Cutty Sark'
.Broadsword 5 with 3 Open ERM intersections, Two type A= Std ERM modules, a second RCS module, and extra Tanks.
Trans Lunar Ferry: The Trans Lunar Ferry goes a long way to show how the small Broadsword craft can be modified to undertake larger tasks simply by the use of Intersections. Consider the cost of Research and Development, then manufacture when building one or two purpose built TLF craft then imagine the saving of this method. Practically no R&D and no specialist manufacture. It would be hoped future manned trans lunar flights would be aboard a Trans Lunar station (Dare I use the term 'Cruiser'). A much larger craft built from Open ERM's that permanentely flies a Trans lunar trajectory, never entering Earth or Lunar Orbit using the gravitational pull of the two bodies to maintain its speed and flight path. Using this method would allow passengers to fly in greater comfort only requiring shuttle flights at either end of the journey to pick up or put off. The use of smaller craft to shuttle crew, required supplies, and passengers, would prove to be significantly cheaper than trying to accelerate and decelerate a much larger craft. ( This is one part of Broadsword I would be very interested in seeing work.) Bulk Supplies could travel using Driod craft.
Most of the versions of intersections shown have been based upon the use of 'Off the peg modules', the ERM. However customer requirements may from time to time call for more specialized intersections. Following are two examples of possible extra Intersection Ideas.
Recovery /Deployment: One of the simplest ways to describe this intersection would be to say that it is the US Space shuttle cargo bay without the US Space shuttle. A simple frame work the RD would be able to carry out all the orbital tasks currently undertaken by the US Shuttle with the advantage for higher orbital capacity. Satellite deployment and repair at geo-stationary orbit. ESA Spacelab and Space Station / Space craft construction. This intersection could also full fill the transfer role picking up supplies from launch vehicles transporting then up to the Space station or other locations.

Towing Module: Following on from the requirements outlined for the RD module the possibility arises that future hardware ie; for the construction of Spacestations and larger craft my become too large for the RD module. From this question the Towing Module came into being. The module has extended arms use as fixing point allowing a Broadsword craft to then serve the purpose of 'Space Tug'. This could operate using either a Manned CM or with the Droid Module.

Perhaps You have an idea for an intersection your self?......... |

Finally: It is important to note that all the intersection will have the basic ability to transfer fuel and life support resources either through or round the module dependent on the safety aspect. Additional pumps may be required, and as with the Main Drive Unit will require research into the way the Intersections are joined and how these resources are connected/ disconnected, and purged when not in use.
